KTK06: VIET NAM QUE HUONG TOI (Dihavina)

Ladies & Gentlemen, we are now arriving in Vietnam. We'll stay here for a few weeks. Our little trip will focus on patriotic music from the sad days of Vietnam war. Though we don't have much clue about it we'll probably get a guide to help us on our way...

Today, we'll start with VIET NAM QUE HUONG TOI (Dihavina CKS 004, early seventies), a truelly gorgeous record (even if the LP is near mint the pressing is not very good). It wasen't possible to get any informations about this record exept from the translation of songs tittles. Dihavina records seems to have been pretty active during war time and I guess they are still putting up records today. This record sounds like communist patriotic music, it reminds of luxurious old movies soundtracks and occidental opera orchestras... Lots of musicians (strings, piano...) and high class vocals and choirs (list on back cover). Sorry folks we don't know anything else about it, we just hope you'll enjoy it as much as your captain does!

KTK05: POSTCARD FROM THAILAND

Hi There!
Today, we got a postcard asking about the name of our airline company: KADAO TON KAO.
Well, it come from one of our captain's biggest addiction: LUK THUNG ISAN! As Peter from Monrak Pleng Thai easily guessed (he is one the specialists of the subject), it's the tittle of a song by one of our favourite Isan singer, miss Hongthong Dao'Udon!

This song talks about the time shared together under the «kadao» tree and sad memories of love lost... Also, the fruits of this tree are very bitter and are used in cooking recipes in many south east asian countries.

As we're just flying over Isan this time (next top will be Vietnam) I guess it's time to watch TWO FACES OF THAILAND (A MUSICAL PORTRAIT, 1983), a great documentary directed by Jeremy Marre (who released many music documentaries for the BBC).
Better than talking about it...

“Ladies and gentlemen, captain speaking. I’d like to direct your attention to the television monitor. We will be showing TWO FACES OF THAILAND and would like the next hour of your complete attention.”

Next stop: Vietnam

KTK04: MAEVA TAHITI (MANUITI)

tahitian fire dance
 All right folks, captain speaking...
This is our last day in Tahiti and it seems like Joel and his band made us a little surprise. They'll play for us the july festival traditionnal music and dances at night, on the beach! They been awarded for that show so our crew guess you'll have a good time. JOEL ET SON GROUPE FOLKLORIQUE, MAEVA TAHITI (manuiti 3073) has been recorded in 1967 and is mostly made of traditionnal music (+ a bunch of trax by Yves Roches and Eddy Lund... We'll sure talk about them in our next trip to polynesian Islands). Heavy drums, choir, guitars and ukulele and their famous "fire dance". Happy party music, fast and dancy tunes (30 songs in 30minutes!). We hope you enjoyed our stay here...

We'll soon continue our musical trip to other places but we'll sure fly over Tahiti again very soon for various points of view on modern tahitian folk music. Don't forget your passport.
Thanks for choosing KTK!

By the way, don't forget to have a look at Paul Gauguin's tahitian paintings.

KTK03: POSTCARD FROM ITALY

PARADIS DES HOMMES (1955 Polydor)
Our crew love to collect postcards from various places but sometimes, it's little (or totally) out of the context of our curent trip. We'll keep them in the "postcards box" so the cockpit don't get too messy. We'll happen to recive postcards about other kinds of music, video tapes or maps of interesting places to visit...
Today, we got a sweet little postcard from Italy (though it's a french pressing). PARADIS DES HOMMES (1955 Polydor 20 308) Is the original soundtrack for an italian documentary movie : L'Ultimo Paradiso.
I did not really know what to expect at all when I found this little 7' in medium shape last sunday but it's actually quite a nice recording. 5 tracks of 50's style movie orchestra and choir.Directed by A.F Lavagnino. With a ploynesian mood and a bunch of local instruments. Seems like Mr Lavagnino was an «exotic movie» specialist, he is behind many other soundracks.
This is right in the mood of our curent tahitian trip so I hope you'll enjoy our little break.

L'Ultimo Paradiso:
One of a series of colorful Italian documentaries released Stateside in the late 1950s, L'Ultimo Paradiso is better known by its English-language title The Last Paradise. The film's 95-minute running time is devoted to the people and customs of the Central Pacific islands. One startling scene involves a religious ceremony that segues into a primitive form of bungie-jumping! Also worth noting are the methods employed by native fisherman to avoid being consumed by sharks. As an added come-on to the "tired businessman" crowd, L'Ultimo Paradiso throws in a few shots of bare-breasted native girls. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
Director: Folco Quilici
Awards: 1957 - Berlin International Film Festival - Silver Bear - Feature-Length Documentary

KTK02: TAHITI L'ENCHANTERESSE (Festival)

Ia orana Tahiti

Hi everybody!
Today, we'll fly over Tahiti in a little hydroplane with our guest Jacques Chegaray. This guy was a world traveler since the 30's and off course a music lover. He plublished many books from his trips including one with the same tittle as this 7' from 1959 we got today. TAHITI L'ENCHANTERESSE (FX451222M) is a great ethnomusicology document, it introduces you to various styles in tahitian music. Traditionnal polyphonic ensembles such as Hyménées de Papara and Hyménées de Mataeifa,  folk from mid 50's: ukulele, backing vocals and sweet voice by Titi. Also, the indigenous choir of Makatea recorded for the first time here. The recordings are a little rough sometimes but we hope you'll enjoy!
After two weeks looking around, we'll soon listen to tahitian bands of various style some groovy stuff and some personnal favourite from the airport of Papeete! Still we won't forget to have some great traditionnal music. Thanks for choosing KTK airlines.

KTK01: TAHITI FOLKLORE (Tiare Tahiti Records)

Tahiti in the 50's
We sure have to start our trip somewhere so let's start home... in France. Today we have some great tunes from the island of Tahiti (french polynesia).TAHITI FOLKLORE, 1962 (TT-8230) is one of the great recordings by Gaston Guilbert who was one of the precursors of tahitian cinema (Tahiti Films) and audio recordings (Tiare Tahiti Records). Gaston Guilbert released his first 78' record in early 50's and was the first to put out 7' and 12' records in Tahiti. You can find him and his friend Yves Roche hiding Behind many good records.
In this great LP, you'll find an awesome mix of traditionnal and folk music from various bands (no credits available), some sweet tropical rocking tunes and very good polyphonic ensemble...
Our crew seems to enjoy the stay so you can expect to get some more tahitian delights very soon.
