KTK70: AUTOPILOT "HONGTHONG SING" (pt3)

Ladies & gentlemen, Just like last time when I been busy for a few weeks, we'll set the engines to "autopilot" so everybody can keep on dancing!

This time, we'll fly to Isan, the north-eastern part of Thailand to enjoy some great local music! I'm pretty sure that those who liked our last stay in Thailand will really enjoy this new journey into Thai popular music.

During the upcoming  weeks we'll get a big bunch of Luk Thung and Molam songs from the 70's and 80's packed in an MP3 CD full of goodness. Quite an unusual format for occidental people but it's getting really popular in South East Asia. I could not resist to post this one featuring some long time favourites such as Hongthong Dao'Udon, Angkhanang Khunchai, Sam Phalang Sao (as featured on the cover) and some more!
Enjoy...

KTK67: SIKH VIDYALAYA: GURBANI SANGEER

Ladies & gentlemen, this is the last day of our trip into Sikh music, this time we are in Bangkok where the Sikh community is quite an important part of the «little India» area. Let's meet there for some ceremonies at the local Sikh temple with: SIKH VIDYALAYA BANGKOK: ANNUAL GURBANI SANGEER SAMMELAN (Sikh Vidyalaya, from the 90's).

Today's tape features a live captation of a religious ceremony from the Sikh Vidyalaya School, it features some speaches and some very sweet music mixing tablas and harmonium to the local kids choir prayers.

It's in the same mood as the tape posted on Monrak Pleng Thai a few months ago. It's a great occasion to end up this little trip in some kind of meditative and peacefull mood before we starts another one... Just a few streets away!

KTK66: SIMRAN SADHNA (vol 12)

Ladies and gentlemen, back to India today to continue our trip over Sikh music. This time we'll get more conventional and devotional with SIMRAN SADHNA vol 12 (Amrit Kirtan A.K.011 from mid 90's).

Today, we'll get in trance with this surprising tape: some repetitive lyrics that goes on and on and on, some men «chorus» vocals, a lead singer and percussions...

It's quite strange to notice how far the gross cover design is from the music. Enough said for today... Have a nice trip!

KTK65: MALKIT SINGH: JIND MAHI DEE

SURPRISINGLY THIS TAPE WAS UNDER COPYRIGHT AND I'VE BEEN ASKED TO REMOVE IT SO IT WON'T BE AVAILABLE ANYMORE HERE. APOLOGIES TO THE COPYRIGHT OWNERS. I HOPE THIS POST WILL HAVE HELP SOME OF YOU TO DISCOVER THE WORK OF  MALKIT SINGH.

Ladies & gentlemen, guess what? We're now in Birmigham, England, where the Indo-Pakistanese community is well represented off course the Sikhs too. After the Bollywood vibes from last week, we'll get something more in the mood of Bhangra with MALKIT SINGH GOLDEN STAR: JIND MAHI DEE (HMV 3/89 from 1989).

Just as last week, the prayers are turned into modern dancy songs, this time with an 80's Bhangra feeling! Great vocals from Malkit Singh, men and women backing vocals, lots of synth and percussions!

A good tape even if it can get a little "cheesy" sometimes. I really doubt you'll resist dance along! «hoooo hoooo, haaa haaa...».

KTK64: PATTA PATTA SINGHAN DA VAIRI

Ladies & gentlemen, get ready to fly a lot this month as we're going to move around quite often! Though we'll focus on religious Sikh music we'll get some very different music styles on tapes from various places around the globe.
If Sikhism represent a very small part of the people in India, it's adepts travels pretty well,  you can found them in many countries.

We'll start this trip in Punjab (north of India) with PATTA PATTA SINGHAN DA VAIRI (Music Bank MBC1099 from early 90's).

The tape we got today will remind those who fly with us quite often of the Bollywoodian music we got a few months ago, bold vocals, heavy indian style percussions and tablas, harmonium, flutes, synth... of course the lyrics are deeply religious but most of us won't understand anything. Anyway, it's a pretty good tape!

KTK63: LES KAVEKA - DANSEZ LE TAMOURE

Ladies & gentlemen, it's our last day in Tahiti and like in the previous posts we'll get some 60's Tamouré.
If the last week we got some exemples of the influences of occidental music to the local songs this time the influences are tahitian and their music starts to invade Europe with LES KAVEKA - DANSEZ LE TAMOURE (Disques Vogue EPL.8049 from 1962).

The Ep we get today is the perfect exemple of the influences going on both side as we get some tahitian tunes played by a parisian/tahitian band. in the 60's this kind of music was all the rage in Europe and you can find (horrible) covers of the genre in many exotic countries such as Poland, Germany... (even in local language).

Les Kaveka released a bunch of Ep's and set the parisian nights on fire with some furious Tamouré. Not the most authentical music we ever get here but a good exemple of the spreading of the polynesian culture, 4 tracks, 3 in tahitian and 1 in french mixing influences from rock & roll and french yéyé to tahitian modern folk songs, quite enjoyable!

 It's time to go,

KTK62: TIMI ET SES TAHITIENS: AMOUR ET TAMOURE

Ladies & Gentlemen, we'll continue our trip into tahitian mid 60's Tamouré with another unusal record. The growing amount of tourists visiting the Polynesian Island was a great opportunity for local musicians to produce some records and today we'll get some great music featuring mixed influences with TIMI ET SES TAHITIENS: AMOUR ET TAMOURE (RCA Victor 430.113.S from the mid 60's).

Though i don't know much about the people behind this record, the music is pretty nice more "mellow" and "cheesy" than the last post it features some sweet vocals, ukulele, guitars, some great drums...

It seems like timi is pretty shy as the cover photo is from a stock image and also appear on an hawaian record. Anyway, for those who had hard time to learn to dance the Tamouré, the back cover displays all the movements you need to learn...

KTK61: MANUIA & MAEVA: OTUITUI TAHITI

Ladies & gentlemen, It seems like some of you hurt their back last week dancing with us on Tamouré. The survivors will have to meet our crew at the local airport as today we'll ear the sweet voices of  MANUIA & MAEVA: OTUITUI TAHITI (Reo Tahiti Records RT520 from the mid 60's).

The Lp we got today is "one of a kind" (well, I hope I'm wrong). Take 2 air hostesses from UTA, Tahitian ones off course and if possible sisters, get some keyboards, drums and guitars, mix all together and you'll get this refreshing record "OTUITUI TAHITI".

The tittle is the contraction of the name of 2 tahitian hit songs and that's all we'll get here, 12 songs composed by Yves Roche or Eddie Lund brilliantly turned into some 60's tahitian rock & roll with the sweet voices of the Maraeauia sisters that comes and go, together or on solos.

This record is for sure one of my favourite tahitian 60's lp  and I can remember the day I found it at a flea market, it came from an old man who was workingon a boat at this time and who was selling his memories for a few coins... Thanks to him!
